Jindřich Wielgus (26.2. 1910 in Karviná - 6.5. 1998 in Prague) - sculptor, graphic artist

He studied at ŠUŘ in Brno (1929-1931), at AAAD in Prague (1931-1934), The Academy of Fine Arts, Prague (1934-1938) and at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome (1937-1936). In sculpture he focused on social motives. He was influenced by the environment of the mines in Karvinsko and Ostravsko (Above the Dead Friend, 1939). He also devoted himself to the more intimate poetic motives of women, mothers with children. In the 1960s, he created several non-figurative sculptures (Vzpomínka, 1964), later he focused on graphics. In the 1970s he composed small lyrical sculptures based on the encounter of reality with fantasy. He dealt with drawing, graphics, he illustrated a number of books. He was a member of SVU Manes (1946-1950) and the Group 58 (1957-1962).

1952 - Monument to the dead miners in Doubrava. 1967 - Sculpture Sitting at Kovona Karviná. 1986 - Relief for the policlinic in Vsetín.

Awards (selection)

1962 - Silver Medal at the International Ceramics Exhibition in Prague. 1976 - Award of Ostrava-Karviná mines for art. 1989 - National Artist.
